Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950 in Blackheath, London. Branson's journey began early as he published the "Student" magazine when he was just 16. He did not complete graduation and started an audio record mail-order business in 1970. By 1972 Richard opened a chain of record stores later known as "Megastores" marking the birth of the Virgin brand. Branson's Virgin brand has had tremendous success during the 80's as he set up the Virgin Atlantic Airways. In 1990 Richard sold the Virgin Records groups to EMI for $1 billion to keep afloat his airlines business. Branson later re-entered the records business in 1996 under the name "V2 records" but didn't enjoy the same success and later sold it to Zavvi.

Richard Branson was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from Loughborough University in 1993. He was knighted in 1999 for his services to entrepreneurship. In 2000, Branson received the Tony Jannus Award for his accomplishments in commercial air transportation.
